The webzine Notes on Metamodernism ran from 2009 to 2016. It was part of a long term interdisciplinary transnational research project documenting developments in twenty-first century culture that could no longer be explained in terms of the postmodern, but needed to be conceived of by another critical discourse – metamodernism.
It is here that we find metamodernism fully realized as the political movement. In 2017, Daniel Görtz and Emil Ejner Friss’s Scandinavian school of political metamodernism continued the sociological tradition by way of adult development theorists Ken Wilber, Michael Commons, Don Beck, Chris Cowan and the like.

Specifically, according to Görtz, metamodernism is: 1) a cultural phase; 2) developmental stage of society; 3) stage of personal development (with different complexly intertwined sub-categories thereof); 4) an abstracted meta-meme; 5) a philosophical paradigm, and 6) a sociopolitical movement.
